Artist Resource List

A list of resources I've used on my journey I think will help you too.

Drawing

Solid skill in drawing is the foundation of all art. Here's my recommendations of what to use.

  • Creature Art Teacher by Aaron Blaise

    • Aaron has hundreds of hours of lessons & tutorials for drawing an more! There's always a sale for something so you can learn a lot without breaking your bank.

  • Art of Street Fighter

    • Or any fighting game artbook of your choice; these are good for observing muscle groups, anatomy, and dynamic poses

  • Art Model Series

    • I have volume 7 & 10

    • There are other resources out there to get good nude model photos, I've seen some cheap packages being sold on Art Station and the like before

  • Beginner's Guide to Fantasy Drawing

    • This is a fun book to build upon your existing knowledge of anatomy; I'd recommend taking Aaron Blaise's anatomy course before jumping into this book

  • Color and Light by James Gurney

    • The book is jam packed with information and can be a bit wordy, however the more you revisit this book, the more it makes sense.

Animation

Becoming a master animator is my ultimate goal. Here's who I've used thus far to help me develop my skill.

  • 30 Day Animator by justGoscha

    • 30 days of simple animation exercises. It's made for animators of all skill levels. The main focus is to teach/reinforce the basics and provide feedback. You also have the opportunity to engage with other artists in the discord channel set up for this.

  • Creature Art Teacher by Aaron Blaise

    • Aaron has hundreds of hours of lessons & tutorials for drawing an more! There's always a sale for something so you can learn a lot without breaking your bank.

Storytelling

At heart I see myself as a visual storyteller and I break that into two parts: visual (drawing/animation) and storyteller (writing). One day you may want to write and then visually translate a story you have in your head. Here's what I've used to help me map it all out.

Technology

These are the current tools I'm using. I'm still learning what is best for what task but as of right now, I'm getting the job done with these things:

  • Krita

    • Krita is a Photoshop alternative which has a nice 2D animation workstation. I like drawing frame by frame so this free software scratches that itch. There are other open software which people use to great effect, but it really is all about preference. The tool is what you make of it.

  • Huion Kamvas Pro 16 Drawing Tablet

    • I like the screen size and the pressure sensitivity works pretty well with Krita. One problem I've encountered so far is a small stand that comes with it doesn't hold the tablet well so it can fall off easily and potentially damage the screen. So I recommend buying a different kick stand for it. The other problem I've run into is the cursor alignment goes off point in specific areas of the screen, what part varies on the tablet and doing the realignment process doesn't help. It's not so detrimental to my work, but if you're one who is big on precision, be aware of this.

Other

As the sources grow for this section, I'll eventually label them under certain categories. For now, they will just be in a miscellaneous pile.

  • How to Steal like and Artist by Austin Kleon

    • A simple and short read but insightful into the attitude artists must take to be successful

  • Amazon/Ebay

    • I use both sites to buy artbooks from various media I like - movies, videogames, animation. Sometimes Ebay not only has the books you're looking for but are cheaper than Amazon which is why I included it. Buy the artbooks for the styles you admire even if you don't incorporate it as your own.
